How to read these docs
Nokuo is a local-first encrypted workspace for developer resources. Daily work happens in the desktop app. The website docs explain installation, boundaries, security, sync, accounts, and plans.
If you are new to Nokuo, read in this order:
- Getting Started: download, create a Vault, and start organizing resources.
- Installation and Activation: platform installation, first launch, and sign-in.
- Features: see what Nokuo can store.
- Encryption: understand Argon2id, XChaCha20-Poly1305, and the zero-knowledge boundary.
- Security and Data Storage: understand where data lives and the service boundary.
- Sync and Restore: understand local-sync folders and S3-compatible object storage.
- Developer Workflow: how to use Nokuo while coding.
- Comparison: compare with 1Password, Proton Pass, Bitwarden, Notion, and Obsidian.
- Account: account boundaries, sign-in, and license visibility.
- FAQ: quickly find common questions and boundary notes.
- Screenshots Appendix: open this when you only want desktop shots and sanitized sample data.
The desktop screenshots are embedded in the relevant step pages. screenshots is now just an appendix and asset overview.

Core concepts
- Local Vault: your primary data directory, placed where you choose.
- Encrypt before sync: content is encrypted locally before sync or restore.
- Nokuo service boundary: the service manages accounts, licenses, plans, and required metadata. It does not store plaintext materials.
