Comparison

Nokuo compared with 1Password, Proton Pass, Bitwarden, Notion, and Obsidian.

In one line

Nokuo is a local-first encrypted workspace built for developers. Not just storage — structured entry, bulk import, per-project export, and copy-by-field are all built for developers. Wider than password managers (holds DB, SSH, code, and configs), safer than note apps (local-first encryption, service stores no plaintext), and the storage is yours (local + S3-compatible, no self-hosting required).

For the full comparison matrix, see the Compare page.

Nokuo vs 1Password / Proton Pass / Bitwarden

All three are mature password managers with server-side E2E, built around passwords. Developer resources (database connection strings, SSH private keys, code snippets, project configs) usually only fit into "secure note" text boxes, with no structured fields, no copy-by-field, and no per-project export to .env. Data lives in the vendor cloud; Bitwarden can be self-hosted but requires you to operate a server.

Nokuo is local + your own storage by default, with no server to operate, and offers structured entry, bulk import, per-project export, and copy-by-field for developer resources. See Developer Workflow.

Nokuo vs Notion

Notion is a powerful cloud knowledge base that holds anything, but it isn't built for secrets: not E2E, platform-side access is possible, and offline support is limited. Putting API keys and database passwords in Notion means you need to accept that cloud-side trust boundary yourself.

Nokuo vs Obsidian

Obsidian is a local Markdown knowledge base with data on your disk. It has no built-in encryption, so if you store keys and passwords directly, they sit in plaintext on disk, making it a poor credential vault unless you add your own encryption layer.

Where Nokuo sits

  • Holds: keys, passwords, DB, SSH, code, docs, and config.
  • Real encryption: local-first, sync sends ciphertext, service cannot decrypt.
  • Storage is yours: local + local-sync folders or S3-compatible storage.
  • Desktop workflow: built for the search, copy, and lock rhythm of developers.

How to choose

  • Only passwords, want open source and self-hosting: Bitwarden.
  • Team knowledge base, no secrets involved: Notion.
  • Personal Markdown notes: Obsidian.
  • Encrypted management of developer resources (keys + configs + SSH + code + docs): Nokuo.
